Thrive! Positive Psychology and Wellbeing was created in response to the rising epidemic of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety that are currently appearing in the workplace.

About Tess Howells

I am a positive psychologist.  I am interested in helping people to live the best, happiest, most meaningful lives that are possible for them.  I wasn’t always a positive psychologist.  I have worked in clinics in rural Australia, for aboriginal health services and for organisations dealing with “problems” and I was regarded as an expert in mood and other mental health disorders. I was very successful at assisting people to recover from illness – but often they would tell me their lives lacked joy and meaning.

In 2005 after my marriage ended and I faced financial challenges and concerns about how to raise my three children, I had an episode of Major Depression which very nearly ended my life.  I was assisted in my recovery by a wonderful general practitioner and I experienced how helpful anti-depressant medication can be, but like so many of my clients, once I had recovered from clinical depression, I still didn’t feel particularly happy or fulfilled.

In recent years I had been reading about Dr Seligman’s new approach for psychology, focussing on the factors that contribute to living our lives well, rather than focussing on problems.

As my clinical practice continued to overflow with depressed and anxious patients referred to me by their doctors, I started asking the “Why?” questions and began my research, testing out my findings with my own patients over the next few years.  The results have been published in my book “Change Your Thinking, Change Your World” and are the research base for my individual and corporate training programs.

I am passionate about the need to work holistically in preventing depression and anxiety and offering treatment options that go beyond medication.  I am equally passionate about helping people not just recover from mental illnesses, but to live healthy, fulfilled, meaningful lives that make a positive contribution to all society.
